Recent archaeological findings in the Czech Republic have highlighted significant historical sites. At Pernštejn Castle, researchers uncovered stone cannonball fragments that confirm a 1424 siege by Catholic forces, an event once considered fictional. The site also revealed rare ‘trousers embrasures’ and various medieval artifacts. In Chleby, archaeologists from the University of West Bohemia have identified a 6,500-year-old prehistoric sanctuary that predates Stonehenge by more than 1,000 years. The monument features a circular enclosure measuring approximately 230 metres in diameter, surrounded by a ditch over 2.5 metres deep. The site appears to have functioned as a ceremonial center designed to track solar and lunar cycles. Researchers identified 12 irregularly spaced entrances positioned to create specific sightlines for astronomical observation. Two primary observation points have been discovered: one aligning with the Moon’s extreme horizon positions during its 18-year cycle, and another connecting the summer solstice sunrise with the winter solstice sunset. Lead researcher Petr Krištuf noted that such circular enclosures are “previously unknown in the region for this time period.” Evidence from the location, including bull skulls and human remains, suggests the site was used for ritualistic purposes and may have been associated with a bull cult. This discovery is part of a broader trend of significant prehistoric findings in Central Europe, including the identification of a 5,500-year-old megalithic tomb in Wyrzecz, Poland, associated with the Funnel Beaker culture.
