The malaria outbreak near Frankfurt Airport has expanded, with health authorities confirming two new cases of malaria tropica (Plasmodium falciparum) in the Schwanheim district. These new infections bring the total number of confirmed cases in the area to eight, with three deaths reported to date. Consistent with previous reports, the newly infected individuals are local residents who have not recently traveled to malaria-endemic regions. This reinforces the suspicion of ‘airport malaria,’ where Anopheles mosquitoes are potentially transported via aircraft or luggage. The Robert Koch Institute has noted that these mosquitoes can travel distances of five to ten kilometers. In response, mosquito traps have been deployed, and samples are being sent to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp to identify the origin of the mosquitoes. While the risk to the general public remains very low, airport operator Fraport has advised employees to seek immediate medical attention at the first sign of symptoms, such as fever. Residents in the vicinity continue to be advised to use mosquito repellent, wear protective clothing, and utilize window screens. Recent reports clarify the timeline of the fatalities, noting that the three deaths include the two Schwanheim residents and two deaths from an earlier cluster in July, during which six Frankfurt Airport employees contracted the parasite. Local health officials have urged physicians to consider malaria as a possibility for patients presenting with unexplained fever, even in the absence of travel history. Following a fatality on September 17, authorities in Schwanheim distributed 5,000 leaflets to inform residents of symptoms including high fever, chills, headaches, and joint pain. Officials emphasized that because high fevers are not always immediately suspected to be malaria in Germany, early diagnosis is critical to preventing mortality.
