The U.S. Army is advancing the Janus Program, a $2.2 billion initiative to deploy portable nuclear microreactors to enhance energy resilience and reduce reliance on traditional electrical grids and fossil fuel logistics. Initially, General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) was selected as an industry partner to develop the General Atomics Tactical Energy System (GA-TES). This liquid-metal-cooled microreactor is designed for remote environments, featuring a scalable output of approximately 5 to 20 megawatts electric (MWe) and a 40-year design life. Fort Hood, Texas, was designated as the site for development and testing. As In partnership with the program progressed, Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), the scope expanded program utilizes a vendor-owned operating model. The Army expects to include five selected vendors tasked with deploying approximately deploy more than 20 modular, factory-built reactors across five domestic military bases between 2028 and 2030. These units are designed to be transportable via standard truck, rail, air, or barge. The selected installations and vendors include Antares Nuclear at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; BWXT Technologies at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems at Fort Hood, Texas; Radiant Industries at Fort Benning, Georgia; and Westinghouse Government Services at Fort Drum, New York. For instance, BWXT Technologies is slated to deploy a 20-megawatt reactor at Fort Campbell, with a projected groundbreaking in late 2028 and operations beginning in the early 2030s.
