The Dominican Republic is facing a severe road safety crisis characterized by high fatality rates and significant economic impact. United Nations special envoy Jean Todt has described the situation as a “disaster,” noting that approximately 3,000 people die annually in traffic accidents. These incidents are the leading cause of death for children and youths aged 5 to 19 and the second leading cause of death for adults.

Recent specific incidents have underscored these dangers, including a fatal collision in Santo Domingo Este where a 10-year-old boy was killed after a motorcycle was struck by a heavy truck. Another collision on the Autopista Las Américas involving a minibus and a truck resulted in four injuries, including three employees of an aviation security firm.

Public criticism has also emerged regarding deteriorating infrastructure. On the Autopista Juan Pablo II, users have reported issues with pavement maintenance, lighting, and signage following the transition of road administration to the RD Vial Trust in 2021. Economically, the cost of these accidents is substantial; projections based on previous World Bank studies suggest the impact could reach approximately US$14.652 billion relative to the 2025 GDP.
