Tau Robotics, a San Francisco-based startup, has launched a pilot program offering residential and commercial cleaning services using humanoid robots. The service, which utilizes models such as the Chelsea and Elon, charges $30 per hour. While the robots are equipped with artificial intelligence to perform tasks like vacuuming, wiping counters, and taking out trash, they are not yet fully autonomous. Human operators use virtual reality goggles to monitor camera feeds and intervene if a robot becomes stuck. CEO and co-founder Alex Koch stated the company aims to reach 1,000 cleaning sessions per week in San Francisco by 2027, with intentions to expand to other U.S. cities and international markets by 2028. Experts have noted potential safety and privacy concerns, as well as regulatory risks related to the use of hardware manufactured in China. As of September 2026, the pilot program has been operational for approximately one month and has serviced over 50 residences. The service is currently available by invitation only. While the robots use AI and depth data for navigation, certain areas such as bathrooms and bedrooms are excluded from standard cleaning unless specifically requested. Koch also noted that each robot costs $50,000 to manufacture.
