US-Canada trade dispute escalation

Trade tensions between the United States and Canada have escalated following Canada’s implementation of retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion of U.S. goods, including electronics, dairy, and steel.

In response, President Donald Trump has threatened to block the Canadian aerospace manufacturer Bombardier from selling aircraft in the United States unless the company shifts manufacturing to American soil. Trump stated via social media that the company must “build here and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank’” to maintain market access. Additionally, the U.S. government has indicated it may exclude Canadian entities from federal procurement bidding processes.

Bombardier, which produces Challenger and Global series business jets, relies on the U.S. for more than half of its revenue. The company has noted that its operations are deeply integrated with the American economy, employing roughly 3,500 people and utilizing a supply chain of 2,800 American companies. Because Bombardier jets frequently use American-made engines from providers such as GE Aerospace and Honeywell Aerospace, a sales ban could potentially impact major U.S. industrial players and the broader aerospace supply chain.
