Ketogenic diet clinical trial results

Overview

A clinical trial published in Cell Metabolism suggests that a ketogenic diet may be more effective at reducing liver fat and reversing prediabetes than Mediterranean or plant-forward diets.

The study involved adults with obesity, prediabetes, and fatty liver disease who were guided to lose approximately 10% of their starting body weight. While all dietary groups achieved similar weight loss, the ketogenic group—characterized by 73% fat and 4% carbohydrate intake—showed superior metabolic improvements.

Specifically, participants on the ketogenic diet experienced an average 67% reduction in liver fat, compared to approximately 45% in the Mediterranean and plant-forward groups. Additionally, 50% of the ketogenic group no longer met the criteria for prediabetes by the end of the study, whereas 29% of the Mediterranean group and 7% of the plant-based group achieved the same result. Researchers noted that the ketogenic diet may trigger an increase in glucagon, a hormone that assists in removing fat from the liver.
