Wildfires have impacted different regions of Spain during the late summer of 2026. In August, a fire near Aldea del Fresno, approximately 50 kilometers west of Madrid, prompted an emergency response involving nine firefighting aircraft. High temperatures and strong winds fueled the blaze, leading authorities to instruct roughly 3,500 residents to remain in their homes while evacuating surrounding urban areas. In September, a fast-moving wildfire occurred in the mountainous Ermita del Rosario area near Benahavís on the Costa del Sol. This incident triggered the activation of the Plan Infoca emergency phase 1. Wind gusts of up to 50 km/h and steep terrain complicated containment efforts. Authorities issued alerts in Spanish and English, advising approximately 9,500 residents to stay indoors. While about 50 residents were evacuated from the Montemayor Alto area, no homes were reported destroyed. The fire resulted in three injuries, including one person with burns, a firefighter with a broken wrist, and one individual treated for smoke inhalation. The response included over 200 firefighters and approximately 20 aircraft. During the Benahavís incident, the Junta de Andalucía utilized ES-Alert messages to instruct residents to close windows and take self-protection measures. While confinement orders for the main urban center were eventually lifted as conditions improved, preventive evacuations remained in place for residential areas including Montemayor, La Coja, and Benahavís Hills.
