Chimú elite tomb discovery in Chan Chan

Overview

Archaeologists have discovered a nearly intact 600-year-old funerary platform at the Chan Chan archaeological complex near Trujillo, Peru. Located within the Utzh An walled complex, the site contains the remains of at least 38 high-status individuals believed to be members of the Chimú elite or royalty.

The discovery is considered significant because the mausoleum has remained unlooted since the mid-15th century, a period coinciding with the Inca conquest of the region. This provides rare, undisturbed data regarding the civilization’s funerary rituals and social structures.

Excavations revealed a wealth of ceremonial offerings, including metal weapons, copper and gold artifacts, ornate jewelry, carved wooden boxes, and items made of shell and quartz. One specific burial was noted for deviating from traditional Chimú patterns, with the individual placed in a fully extended position rather than the customary flexed or seated positions, suggesting a possible ritual sacrifice or unique hierarchical distinction.
