Security concerns have increased in the Baltic region following the interception of a drone by NATO fighter jets near Lithuania. Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kavaliauskas confirmed that bomb disposal experts neutralized an explosive device discovered during the incident. Subsequent reports indicate that a Russian drone was shot down in Lithuanian airspace. Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated the drone was originally targeting Ukraine but was diverted through Belarus into Lithuania due to Ukrainian electronic warfare measures. Lithuanian authorities are currently coordinating with Poland and NATO allies to analyze recovered debris, including engines and computers, as investigations into the drone’s trajectory continue. Following a September 15 incursion, aviation engineering expert Saulius Japertas of Kaunas University of Technology noted that such violations may serve as provocations, intelligence operations, or tests of regional air defense response times. Japertas highlighted a shift toward using mass-produced, inexpensive drones, such as the ‘Gerbera’ and ‘Parodija’ models, which are often constructed from foam and inexpensive panels. These low-cost aircraft are designed to act as decoys, forcing air defense systems to expend expensive interceptor missiles on non-threatening targets by flying alongside actual missiles or attack drones.
