Invasive hippopotamus management in Colombia

A legal ruling in Antioquia has prompted urgent action regarding the invasive hippopotamus population in the Nare River. A judge ordered environmental authorities to implement a control plan to protect local students, fishermen, and other river users from the risks posed by the animals. The court mandated specific management actions, safety protocols for school transport, and early warning systems.

In response to these growing concerns, the Colombian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has begun structuring a broader contingency plan for the Magdalena Medio region. This initiative aims to unify technical criteria to protect water sources and endemic fauna. The ministry is working with the Humboldt Institute and regional authorities to ensure the plan is “backed by all available science.”

This effort builds upon a technical management framework approved in 2024, which includes axes such as confinement, translocation, and euthanasia protocols. These protocols were approved in April 2026 after international options for relocating the animals to India, Mexico, and the Philippines were rejected.
