Apple iOS security feature developments

Overview

Apple has introduced new security features within its iOS 27 ecosystem to combat fraud and theft.

In the initial iOS 27 release, the company launched ‘Impersonation Risk Detection’. This tool aims to protect users from social engineering scams by analyzing interaction patterns, timing, and device sensor data to assign risk levels of ‘Unknown, Medium, or High’. This information is shared with supported apps, which can then issue warnings, require identity verification, or implement delays before sensitive actions. To enhance security, any changes to these privacy settings may require a 24-hour waiting period. All data processing for this feature is performed locally on the device to maintain privacy.

Subsequent developments in the iOS 27.2 Beta 2 release indicate that Apple is testing an anti-theft feature codenamed ‘AutoLock’. This system is designed to automatically lock an iPhone if it detects a snatching motion or a sudden loss of connection to a paired Apple Watch. To minimize false positives, the feature utilizes a ‘voting system’ that analyzes multiple sensor signals, such as sudden acceleration or prolonged loss of network connectivity. To prevent accidental lockouts, Apple is implementing safeguards where successful biometric authentication, activity in specific foreground apps, or presence in familiar locations can act as a ‘veto’ to prevent the device from locking. Additionally, a back-off mechanism may temporarily disable the feature if frequent accidental locks occur. Once a theft is identified, the device would trigger its Stolen Device Protection protocols. While the detection service is active in the current beta, the component responsible for executing the actual lock remains disabled while Apple optimizes the logic.
