Seismic activity has been recorded in various regions of Turkey. In late August 2026, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Sincik district of Adıyaman at a depth of approximately 7 kilometers, preceded by a 3.7 magnitude tremor. The event caused brief panic and was felt in surrounding provinces such as Malatya. On September 21, 2026, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Saimbeyli district of Adana at 04:02, occurring at a depth of 7 kilometers. The tremor was felt in Kahramanmaraş, Osmaniye, Kayseri, and Gaziantep. Following the main event, AFAD and local teams conducted field surveys and noted at least nine aftershocks ranging from 1.0 to 2.2 magnitude. Authorities, including the Adana Governor’s Office and Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, reported no immediate casualties or significant property damage. Geologist Professor Osman Bektaş has issued warnings regarding regional seismic risk, specifically highlighting the Savrun Fault. He noted that while major faults in the Kahramanmaraş block ruptured during the 2023 earthquakes, the Savrun Fault remains unbroken and has shown activity. Bektaş suggested that seismic activity in the Saimbeyli area has continued since 2023, potentially indicating the fault is responding to new stress through fragmented ruptures. He stated that because the fault’s current level of locking is unknown, it is inaccurate to claim the danger has passed, though he cautioned against making definitive predictions without more mechanical data.
