In mid-September 2026, wildfires were reported in British Columbia. An out of control fire, believed to be human-caused, was discovered on September 17 near Cowichan Lake on the west side of Bald Mountain. Despite recent rainfall on Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Valley remained extremely dry, and the blaze covered approximately 0.57 hectares in steep terrain. By September 21, a separate human-caused wildfire in the Sooke Hills, known as the Mount Jack wildfire, had grown to over 50 hectares and remained out of control. Discovered on September 20, the The fire has been fueled by warm and dry conditions, producing a highly visible smoke column seen across Greater Victoria, the Cowichan Valley, and as far north as Shawnigan Lake. The fire is moving northeast up the rocky slopes of Mount Jack. Multiple crews, aviation resources, and heavy equipment are working to contain the blaze. While the fire does not currently pose a direct threat to public safety or critical infrastructure, the BC Wildfire Service warns that the situation is dynamic and further growth is expected. The Mount Jack fire is part of a larger trend of human-caused wildfires on the island, which includes a 12-hectare fire near Nitnat Main and a smaller blaze at Pat Phillip Creek. A fire west of Jordan River has recently decreased in size. Mosaic Forests has stated it is supporting firefighting efforts and has reminded the public to avoid activities such as campfires or target shooting that could spark further incidents. Broadly, since April 1, the province has recorded 1,420 wildfires burning approximately 477,521 hectares. While recent rain and cooler weather in late August and early September moderated fire behavior compared to the July and August peak, drought concerns persist in the Okanagan, Vancouver Island, and the Chilcotin.
