Discovery of ancient Odyssey manuscript fragment

Overview

Researchers have identified a rare, 1,700-year-old manuscript fragment of Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ hidden within a collection at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The parchment, dating to approximately 300 AD, was discovered by Mark de Kreij, a specialist in ancient Greek literature at Radboud University, while he was examining early Christian documents.

The fragment is roughly 6.6 by 7.7 centimeters and contains text from the 12th rhapsody (Canto XII), depicting the scene where Odysseus’s crew consumes the sacred cattle of the sun god. Experts suggest the piece may have belonged to a portable ‘pocket edition’ used in the Faiyum Oasis of Egypt. This find is considered highly significant, as only about 30 such fragments of the ‘Odyssey’ are known to exist worldwide.
