European Central Bank digital euro development

Overview

The European Central Bank (ECB) is developing the digital euro, a central bank digital currency intended to serve as a legal digital means of payment and a supplement to physical cash within the eurozone.

A central component of this infrastructure is the Digital Euro Account Number (DEAN), an 18-character alphanumeric identifier beginning with the prefix ‘EU’. Unlike the existing IBAN system, the DEAN will not reveal the user’s specific country or bank, though it can indicate if an account is for private or business use. While private individuals are restricted to a single DEAN, companies may maintain multiple accounts.

For daily transactions, the DEAN can be linked to aliases, such as mobile phone numbers, and managed via smartphone digital wallets. In Austria, 36 banks, including Raiffeisen Bank International and BAWAG, are participating in an ECB pilot project. Testing for the digital euro is expected to begin in the second half of 2027, with DEANs assigned through payment service providers in coordination with the Digital Euro Service Platform (DESP).
