KAIST RAIBO2 robot marathon achievement

Overview

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) developed a quadruped robot named RAIBO2 that successfully completed the 42.195-kilometer Sangju Marathon in South Korea. The robot finished the course in 4 hours, 19 minutes, and 52 seconds, a time slightly faster than the global human average.

To achieve this level of endurance, the team focused on energy efficiency rather than simply increasing battery size. They utilized lighter legs, optimized motor drive electronics, and mapped energy losses across joints and circuits. The robot also employed AI-based reinforcement learning through computer simulations to refine its gait, enabling it to navigate slippery or winding terrain without overheating. RAIBO2 completed the race with more than one-third of its battery life remaining, traveling more than three times the distance per charge than existing quadruped models.
