The 2026 municipal elections in Paraguay have resulted in significant political shifts, characterized by a territorial expansion for the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR) alongside opposition gains in major urban centers. In the capital, Asunción, Soledad Núñez of the Juntos por Asunción alliance secured the mayoralty, marking only the second time a woman has held the position. Núñez Núñez, a civil engineer with a master’s in Public Policy from the University of Oxford, received 133,325 votes (47.78%), narrowly defeating the Colorado Party candidate Camilo Pérez, who garnered 128,301 votes (45.98%). While President Santiago Peña noted that the narrow margins do not constitute a definitive victory or defeat, Senator Silvio Ovelar described the loss in Asunción as a “significant blow” to the ANR that could influence the 2028 general elections. The Tribunal Superior de Justicia Electoral (TSJE) has scheduled final computations for October 23, with Núñez expected to take office on November 3. In Ciudad del Este, the Yo Creo party maintained its influence as Daniel Pereira Mujica won the mayoralty with approximately 72.8% of the vote. vote, receiving over 93,000 votes. Mujica described the result as a “continuity of the political process” led by Miguel Prieto, who indicated that the movement’s success serves as a foundation for future national ambitions. Mujica attributed the win to municipal improvements in infrastructure and education, and the movement now aims to secure a majority in the Municipal Council. Conversely, the ANR demonstrated strength in the interior. Notable victories include Hugo Farías in Luque, Arnold Ramírez in Presidente Franco, and Sebastián “Cheba” Remesowski in Encarnación. In Buena Vista, Estanislao ‘Tani’ Silvero Argüello regained the mayoralty following a tight race. The Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA) retained control in Villa Elisa through Sergio Estigarribia and in Limpio via Juancho Gómez.
