Following the severe weather in early October 2026, the situation in the Las Condes commune of Santiago has escalated into a major emergency response. After the mudslide and flash flood on October 8, President José Antonio Kast declared the area a zone of catastrophe to expedite the mobilization of emergency resources. On October 8, a powerful mudslide triggered by intense rainfall struck the San Carlos de Apoquindo sector. The torrent of water, mud, and debris swept away vehicles and overturned a public transport bus, resulting in at least six injuries, including a one-year-old child with a fracture. The disaster impacted thousands of homes, with some reports indicating over 2,000 properties were affected, alongside damage to local infrastructure such as clinics and universities. By October 9, torrential rains exceeding typical October levels continued to cause significant damage. The overflowing Mapocho River heightened local dangers, prompting authorities to order evacuations. Emergency teams have since rescued or evacuated more than 1,000 individuals. Ongoing challenges include power outages and the persistent threat of additional landslides. In addition to the ongoing rescue and cleanup operations conducted by the Santiago Fire Department and the military, the government has begun applying emergency aid forms in 11 communes within the Metropolitan Region to assist affected families. The Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office continues its investigation into potential criminal negligence regarding preventive measures. Authorities are specifically examining whether the obstruction of two underground ducts or the loss of vegetation from previous summer wildfires contributed to the severity of the landslide. While the Ministry of Public Works previously stated that ‘no preventive measure could have entirely avoided the event’, the investigation remains focused on infrastructure adequacy and the timing of warnings.
