Tatsuro Yamashita 50th anniversary celebrations

Overview

Japanese musician Tatsuro Yamashita is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a solo artist with the release of a new live album, ‘JOY 2’, scheduled for October 14. The album contains 38 tracks selected from over 600 performances spanning 13 national tours between 2008 and 2025.

To support the release, Yamashita produced a documentary-style video titled ‘How JOY 2 Was Made’ and scheduled a series of daily song commentary videos. In further celebrations of his career, Yamashita appeared on the program ‘EIGHT-JAM’ to discuss his performance philosophy, specifically his focus on vocal quality, live interaction, and maintaining groove by avoiding metronomic clicks.

Following its release, ‘JOY 2’ achieved a historic milestone on the Oricon Weekly Album Ranking. At 73 years and 9 months old, Yamashita became the first artist in Oricon history to secure number-one albums across six different decades: his 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. This achievement marks his 13th number-one album, tying him with Masaharu Fukuyama for the most number-one albums by a male solo artist.
