Premio Planeta 75th anniversary gala

Overview

The Premio Planeta is celebrating its 75th anniversary, marking seven and a half decades as a major literary award in the Spanish-speaking world. Founded in 1952 by José Manuel Lara, the prize has grown from an initial 40,000 pesetas to a current structure where the winner receives one million euros and the finalist receives 200,000 euros.

The anniversary celebrations culminated in a gala at the Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc. King Felipe VI attended the ceremony, delivering a speech that emphasized “the importance of the 75th anniversary and the value of creativity.” Queen Letizia also attended, drawing attention for wearing a customized black dress and a diamond bracelet that had not been seen in public since 2004.

The current edition saw a record 1,424 manuscripts submitted, with nine works remaining in contention following a disqualification. The presence of the Spanish monarchs at the event served as institutional support for the nation’s literary and publishing industries.
