Overview

Research indicates that climate change is significantly impacting marine environments and coastal features. A study in the journal Climatic Change warns that over 75% of the world’s premier surf breaks are at high risk of destruction due to rising sea levels, changing tides, and shoreline hardening. Vulnerable locations include sites in the United Kingdom, Australia, El Salvador, and the United States. Simultaneously, an assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) published in Nature reports that 44% of evaluated reef-building coral species face extinction risks. This increase from previous assessments is driven by ocean warming, marine heatwaves, and bleaching episodes. The loss of these corals threatens essential ecological services and biodiversity. The IUCN assessment analyzed 774 species with sufficient data from a total of 892 species on the IUCN Red List. Of these, 340 species are categorized as being at risk: 33 are critically endangered, 251 are endangered, and 56 are vulnerable. This represents a significant decline from 2008, when approximately one-third of these corals were considered threatened. Building on these findings, a systematic global assessment by the IUCN of 127 shallow-water coral reefs across more than 80 countries reveals that 96% are threatened with extinction. This study places these reefs on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems, highlighting a critical risk of habitat collapse. While rising ocean temperatures and frequent marine heatwaves remain the primary drivers, the report identifies overfishing—which removes species like parrotfish that control algae growth—as well as coastal development and pollution as significant additional stressors. Affected areas include the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea, the Mesoamerican Reef, and the Coral Triangle. At the COP17 biodiversity conference in Armenia, the IUCN presented updated findings stating that 96% of assessed shallow-water coral reef ecosystems are at an “extremely high risk of collapse by 2075.”
