A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulted in the deaths of three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, Meghan Lambert. The attacker, identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, was a former special-needs student at the school. He reportedly used a 12-gauge Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun to force entry through locked doors, firing as many as 15 shots within a special education classroom. The gunman was fatally shot inside the school by Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter and military veteran and father of two students who holds a concealed carry permit. Giamanco reported hearing children pleading for their lives and witnessing a teacher struggle with the gunman. After seeing the suspect toss a shotgun over a fence and climb it, Giamanco retrieved a .40-caliber pistol from his vehicle and pursued the shooter into the school. Giamanco told a 911 dispatcher, “I’m sorry, I have to go in. People are going to die.” Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz noted these actions likely prevented further casualties. In a public account following the incident, Giamanco described army-crawling through a broken window toward a special needs classroom where he observed the struggle. He expressed deep emotional distress, stating he is “haunted by the sounds of children pleading for their lives” and the reality that he could not save all the victims. Injured educational assistant Becky Drury, 54, released a statement clarifying she was shot at close range while attempting to close a classroom door, noting she pretended to be dead to avoid further gunfire. Two other individuals, including a student in a wheelchair, remain critically injured and hospitalized. Investigators are examining whether the shooter was radicalized by the ‘764’ network, described by federal authorities as an ‘international child exploitation and nihilistic violent extremist enterprise.’ Additionally, reports indicate the shooter's father, Griffin Jay John Sr., has a significant criminal history and was located by police in Astoria, Oregon, following the incident.
