Environmental enforcement operations in Brazil have involved the seizure and destruction of various illegal materials and the enforcement of wildlife and noise regulations. In Minas Gerais, the State Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad) destroyed significant quantities of seized goods to prevent their reuse in environmental crimes. These items included chainsaws, charcoal, fishing gear, and animal capture devices across the Alto São Francisco, Alto Jequitinhonha, and North of Minas regions. Subsequent enforcement actions included the seizure of wild birds held in illegal captivity in São Mateus do Sul, resulting in fines and criminal infraction reports. Additionally, in Rondonópolis, authorities addressed noise pollution complaints by seizing audio equipment and initiating legal proceedings under the Federal Environmental Crimes Law. More recently, the Federal Police and Ibama launched ‘Operation Saldo Zero’ to dismantle an illegal timber exploitation and trade network in southwest Pará. During searches at sawmills in Anapu and a timber yard in São Domingos do Araguaia, investigators found establishments operating without licenses or under embargo. Authorities noted a significant discrepancy in the Sisflora system, where businesses reported ‘saldo zero’ (zero balance) of forest products despite maintaining large volumes of logs and active processing operations. The investigation is also examining the illegal extraction of timber from federal public forests.
