In early October 2026, Chad reported cases of dengue fever in the provinces of Ouaddaï, Wadi Fira, Sila, and the capital, N’Djaména. Health authorities initially advised citizens to use mosquito nets and eliminate standing water to mitigate transmission risks. By late October, the situation escalated into a growing epidemic. Prime Minister Allah Maye Halina called for a coordinated national response following reports of 3,846 suspected cases and 299 confirmed cases, which resulted in 11 deaths. The government response has expanded to include ground and aerial spraying operations to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, improved sanitation, and mandatory daily prevention education for students in schools. By October 26, the crisis has evolved into what is described as Chad’s “second-largest dengue epidemic on record.” The outbreak now spans six provinces, with dozens of deaths reported and approximately 3,000 suspected or confirmed cases. Factors exacerbating the spread include drought, climate change, and the influx of Sudanese refugees in the eastern part of the country. In response, the Prime Minister convened an interministerial meeting to strengthen epidemiological surveillance, improve medical care, and intensify urban sanitation efforts.
