Detention of Brazilian influencers in Egypt
Overview
Brazilian transgender influencer Mariana Alves, known as Malévola Alves, and her companion Bruna Mercatelli were detained in Alexandria, Egypt, following the circulation of social media videos. Egyptian authorities classified the content as involving “pornographic exhibition, sexual insinuations, and harassment of passersby in public spaces.”
During interrogation, the influencers reportedly admitted to publishing the content to increase social media engagement. The women faced charges including public obscenity, violation of family values, and harassment.
Following the payment of bail, both women were released and permitted to return to Brazil. Upon her return, Alves reported experiencing severe humiliation and physical and sexual abuse while in custody. She alleged that she was forced to remain naked during interrogation and claimed that the treatment she received was motivated by her status as a transgender woman in an Islamic country, stating that the abuse by authorities only ceased once they realized her biological sex.
While the Egyptian Ministry of Interior confirmed the arrests based on allegations of indecency and harassment, Alves maintains that the activities recorded were consensual and intended for entertainment. She reported suffering from panic attacks, anxiety, and depression as a result of the ordeal and intends to seek medical attention. Her legal counsel noted that she could still face judicial consequences and legal proceedings within Egypt despite her departure.
