Getty Images bankruptcy and restructuring
Overview
Getty Images has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to address approximately $1.46 billion in debt. The company’s financial distress is attributed to high investor costs, a failed merger with Shutterstock, and the rise of generative artificial intelligence, which has undermined its traditional licensing model by reducing the demand for stock photography.
The restructuring plan involves canceling existing shares and equity rights. To facilitate the transition to private ownership, the Getty family and Koch Equity Development will inject up to $533 million in new capital. Additionally, unsecured bondholders holding $270 million in nominal volume are expected to receive a collective cash payment of approximately $170.2 million, or roughly 63 percent of the nominal amount.
