Students at Jamia Millia Islamia have entered a prolonged period of unrest, centered on a hunger strike demanding the restoration of the student union, which has not held elections since 2006. The protests have been characterized by allegations of administrative harassment, including the use of physical force against students and the dismantling of protest tents. Controversy emerged regarding “objectionable” graffiti and slogans such as “Free Kashmir” found on campus walls. While some student representatives claim these were planted by outsiders to discredit the movement, other organizations have called for strict action against the writing. As tensions and clashes on campus escalated, the university administration transitioned all academic courses to online mode and closed campus gates and libraries, citing student safety and the need for academic continuity. Following a two-week period of protests, the university Registrar, Professor Mahtab Alam Rizvi, reached an agreement to resume elections. On October 26, the administration issued an official order stating that elections will be held within 15 days of the approval of a new Students’ Union constitution. As part of the agreement, the university has pledged to revoke all suspensions and show-cause notices issued during the protest period and will form a committee to investigate the conduct of security personnel. In exchange, the university has requested that protesting students issue a public apology via a press conference for what it termed “defamatory statements” made against the administration. Student groups remain divided; many protesters have rejected these terms, arguing the order lacks a concrete timeline for constitutional approval and specific election dates, and expressing dissatisfaction with the apology requirement. Other points of contention include demands for the resignation of the university’s Chief Proctor. Amid the ongoing unrest, the university has extended online classes and virtual mid-term examinations until November 8.
