Archaeological discoveries in Egypt
Overview
Recent archaeological efforts in Egypt have yielded significant findings in both Memphis and Alexandria. In Memphis, Czech archaeologists from the Czech Institute of Egyptology rediscovered the Old Kingdom tombs of officials Sabu and Ptahšepsese. These excavations have uncovered previously unknown architectural elements and underground burial chambers linked to the cult of the god Ptah.
Simultaneously, underwater excavations in Alexandria led by the European Institute of Underwater Archaeology (IEASM) and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities resulted in the discovery of a unique bronze seal ring on the submerged island of Antirhodos. The ring features an engraving of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, marking the first time the ancient wonder has been identified on a ring. Researchers noted the iconography aligns with second-century AD coinage, suggesting the Antirhodos palace may have held administrative roles, such as lighthouse management, during that period.
