ESMO 2026 oncology congress developments

Overview

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 congress in Madrid presented various phase 3 clinical trial results across multiple cancer types.

Initial reports highlighted advancements in melanoma, where combining mRNA vaccines with pembrolizumab or using encorafenib and binimetinib with pembrolizumab significantly reduced recurrence or death risks. Lung cancer research showed that osimertinib plus savolitinib reduced disease progression risks in EGFR-mutated and MET-altered NSCLC. Other findings included improved survival rates for muscle-invasive bladder cancer through perioperative durvalumab and enfortumab vedotin, and high response rates for rectal cancer using dostarlimab.

Subsequent updates focused on extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The DeLLphi-305 trial demonstrated that adding tarlatamab to durvalumab maintenance significantly improved median survival to 21.1 months, a 58% reduction in the risk of death compared to durvalumab alone. Discussions also reviewed the established roles of checkpoint inhibitors as frontline therapies for SCLC based on the CASPIAN and IMpower133 trials.
