Poland participation in seeks permanent G20 summit membership
Polish officials are preparing for the G20 summit in Florida, USA, scheduled for December. President Karol Nawrocki has received an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump. While Poland is participating in ministerial and governmental working groups, the government maintains that its presence should be permanent, noting that Poland is among the world's 20 largest economies. The summit has been marked by diplomatic tension. During a meeting in the United States, Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domański engaged in a sharp exchange with Russian Minister of Economic Development Maksim Rieshetnikov. Rieshetnikov accused the European Union of hypocrisy and characterized actions against the Russian merchant fleet as piracy, while also alleging Ukrainian aggression in the Black Sea. Domański responded by asserting that Russia is the aggressor and that its actions threaten global food security. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski described the potential presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the summit as “uncomfortable.” Sikorski stated that while nations must engage with competitors and enemies in international diplomacy, he would not participate in joint photo opportunities with Lavrov and called for an end to the “bloody war” in Ukraine. Sikorski noted that Poland aims to represent the interests of Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia. Expanding on this diplomatic push, Sikorski announced that Poland is actively campaigning for permanent G20 membership. He stated that the United States has tabled a resolution to propose Poland as a permanent member, and the country hopes to secure this status during the current U.S. presidency. Sikorski reported receiving support from India, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi committed to backing the bid during a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The minister also indicated positive engagement with counterparts from Argentina, Canada, South Korea, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia.
