Diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United States remain strained following President Donald Trump’s refusal to recognize Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s reelection, which Trump described as “fraudulent” and a “shame.” Tensions have escalated due to the departure of Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to the United States. Despite a Brazilian Supreme Court order to retain his travel documents due to investigations into corruption and money laundering, the senator reportedly entered the U.S. using an Italian passport. Reports have alleged from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal suggest that White House official Jason Miller assisted in arranging a private jet to transport the senator from Argentina to Miami. The senator reportedly traveled via Argentina and Ecuador on a private Gulfstream G400 jet operated by Baires Fly SA. In response, 25 Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Dina Titus, have demanded explanations from Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The lawmakers have submitted 15 questions regarding whether U.S. diplomatic or immigration resources were used to facilitate the senator’s travel and whether the State Department had prior knowledge of his judicial restrictions in Brazil. They have requested a written response by November 13. During a G20 ministerial gathering in Atlanta, Georgia, Secretary Rubio denied that the U.S. government participated in the logistics of the departure, though he noted that President Trump authorized the senator’s entry via a temporary parole status. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Secretary Rubio held a brief meeting and agreed to a formal bilateral meeting ahead of the G20 leaders' summit, scheduled for mid-December in Miami, Florida.
