Raphaël Glucksmann, leader of the centre-left party Place Publique and a Member of the European Parliament, has officially announced his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election. The announcement was made during a prime-time interview on the TF1 television network, following a three-month period during which Glucksmann traveled across France to present a new patriotic contract. Glucksmann intends to participate in a social-democratic primary organized jointly by the Socialist Party and Place Publique, scheduled for October. He enters a crowded field of contenders that includes Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the radical left, Marine Tondelier of the Greens, and potentially former president François Hollande. This move reinforces the ideological competition on the left, where Glucksmann—who received 13.8% of the vote in the 2024 European elections—faces Mélenchon as a primary rival. Notably, Glucksmann has stated that if he wins the primary, he will not seek any alliance with Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise. His campaign platform focuses on a social-democratic and pro-European agenda aimed at uniting the fractured left. Glucksmann stated his intention to ‘rebuild France’ and expressed concern regarding the rise of the far right. Key proposals include a plan to fund a reduction in social levies on workers' wages by increasing taxes on the top 1% of earners and large inheritances, as well as a rescue plan for public schools.
