Japanese retailers and hotels have continued their reservation period for 2027 New Year ‘Osechi’ traditional cuisine sets, with offerings expanding into specialized restaurant and luxury hotel categories. By late September, FamilyMart launched reservations for 36 varieties across approximately 16,100 stores and its online platform. To address rising costs, the retailer reduced the average price of its sets by 726 yen compared to the previous year and extended its early bird discount period to 68 days. Its lineup includes a “luxury” set with abalone and Wagyu beef, and a “decadent” set containing 1kg of domestic beef. The retailer is also introducing a unique ‘Haitoku Osechi’ (immoral osechi) featuring Miyazaki beef or 1kg of domestic beef to appeal to younger generations, responding to data indicating that 72.5% of women wish to reduce New Year preparation labor. In early October, more specialized providers entered the market. Unagi Washoku Daikoku, operated by New Fuji Co., Ltd., opened bookings for refrigerated sets, including a five-tier Kaiseki set for approximately 48,880 yen, emphasizing handmade, non-frozen ingredients. Meanwhile, Hotel New Otani Osaka introduced premium sets ranging from single-tier options to a luxury six-tier ‘Kiwami Ju 2027’ priced at 254,880 yen. This selection features a blend of Japanese, French, and Chinese culinary styles using high-end ingredients such as abalone, spiny lobster, and Wagyu beef. Additional offerings emerged in early October as Hankyu Department Store began offering approximately 450 sets, ranging from luxury options by Kyoto Kitcho and Minokichi to meat-centric sets from Kakiyasu. In Hokkaido, the Muroran Prince Hotel introduced diverse menus including sushi and Western-style hors d'oeuvres to cater to modern preferences. Other ongoing offerings include Mitsukoshi Isetan’s online promotions for traditional feast items like pufferfish (fugu) sashimi and crab shabu-shabu, alongside earlier announcements from Keio Plaza Hotel, Belle Maison Disney Fantasy Shop, and JTB Shopping.
