Director Danny Boyle has confirmed that the third installment of the ‘28 Years Later’ trilogy is currently ‘on the back burner.’ While Boyle maintains that screenwriter Alex Garland has completed a ‘fantastic script,’ the project lacks the necessary financing to proceed. Several factors are contributing to the delay. The commercial performance of the recent chapter, ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,’ which earned approximately $58 million against a $63 million budget, has created uncertainty regarding the trilogy’s future. Additionally, Garland is currently occupied with a major adaptation of the video game ‘Elden Ring.’ Ring’ for A24. Speaking at the London Film Festival, Boyle clarified that while the script is ready, the project is not a current priority for Sony Pictures. Despite these hurdles, Boyle expressed hope that the film will eventually be produced to complete the trilogy. He also confirmed that Cillian Murphy is expected to reprise his role as Jim.
