40th Festival of Crafts in Budapest

The 40th Festival of Crafts took place in the Buda Castle district of Budapest from August 20 to 23. Organized by the Association of Folk Art Societies, the event featured 60 folk art communities and approximately 100 demonstration workshops.

The United States served as the guest of honor for the festival, marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence. The American delegation included eighteen artists and artisans showcasing skills such as embroidery, ceramics, woodcarving, and printing. Programs included the ‘America’s Tapestry’ embroidery project, pottery demonstrations, and woodcarving, alongside performances representing Northern Ute, Laguna Pueblo, and Navajo communities.

During the festival, the Federation of Folk Art Associations (NESZ) presented awards to outstanding creators and communities. Notable recipients included Tibor Bálint for basketry and Pali Ferenc Kovács for folk furniture painting. Other honors included the Master of the Year, Young Master of the Year, and the Golden Wreath award. The awards also recognized innovation through the Tulipán Foundation, which supports contemporary creators drawing from folk traditions.

Cultural State Secretary Ervin Nagy emphasized that handmade objects and folk craftsmanship represent the ‘gold reserve’ of Hungarian culture, noting the importance of passing these traditions to future generations. International participants also included representatives from Uzbekistan and Poland.
