The 4iG Group has announced plans to introduce direct satellite-to-mobile device connectivity to the Western Balkans through a partnership with SpaceX. Following a September agreement with the American company, the group intends to develop digital infrastructure across Hungary, Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia. Initial testing for the technology is expected to begin in Hungary and Albania in collaboration with universities. While technical requirements are reportedly met, officials noted that establishing legal and regulatory frameworks remains a primary challenge for commercial implementation. In North Macedonia, the rollout will utilize Starlink Mobile technology to improve coverage in rural and mountainous regions. One Macedonia, a subsidiary of 4iG, will implement the service to complement existing mobile networks. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski stated that North Macedonia and Montenegro will be among the first countries outside of Ukraine to implement this direct satellite-to-mobile technology. Nikoloski clarified that the arrangement is a “commercial agreement rather than a state-run military one.” Under current concession agreements, the operator aims to provide coverage in Skopje by March 2027, with the objective of achieving nationwide availability by the end of 2027.
