To mark the 65th anniversary of the 1961 recruitment agreement between Germany and Turkey, North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst conducted a three-day official visit to Turkey. This trip marks the first time a current leader of a German state has undertaken such a visit. Wüst held high-level meetings in Ankara with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and various ministers to discuss economic cooperation, visa facilitation, and the modernization of the EU-Turkey Customs Union. He also met with members of the Turkish opposition and civil society to discuss political repression and detentions. During these discussions, Wüst addressed the political situation in Turkey, expressing support for the opposition and emphasizing the importance of discussing human rights and the legal pressures facing political figures, such as former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. He stated that meeting with these groups is a necessary part of an official function to ensure their concerns are conveyed. On the economic front, Wüst and State Minister Serap Güler announced the expansion of visa facilitation procedures for Turkish businesspeople to address lengthy processes. This expansion aims to build upon the ‘Business Fast Track’ system by including more members of the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) and firms with strong commercial ties to Germany. The visit concluded with several economic agreements, including logistics partnerships involving the Port of Duisburg and cooperation between Cologne/Bonn and Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen airports.
