The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) opened in New York under the theme ‘Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Works for All’. The session is presided over by Khalilur Rahman, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh. As Bangladesh, following the final session before his term ends in December, leadership of outgoing President Annalena Baerbock. Secretary-General António Guterres used the opening to warn that the multilateral global order is straining due to geopolitical mistrust, ongoing conflicts, and decreased aid funding. Guterres characterized rebuilding faith in international cooperation as ‘the defining challenge of our time.’ Discussions during the assembly have also addressed the limitations of the international development system, with calls to transition from humanitarian aid dependency toward sustainable investment in local institutions, infrastructure, and markets. In preparation for the assembly, security operations in New York City have intensified. The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating with approximately 20 partner agencies, including the NYPD and the U.S. Coast Guard, to provide 24-hour protection for visiting world leaders. Measures include a ‘frozen zone’ on First Avenue between East 41st and East 48th Streets and a temporary flight restriction near the UN from September 20 through September 26 to target unauthorized drones. The NYPD is deploying heavy weapons teams, K-9 patrols, and bomb squads to manage potential threats and protests. The assembly's agenda is expected to cover critical global issues, including conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and Iran, as well as artificial intelligence and climate change.
