Istanbul hosted the 9th International Mediation Conference, sponsored by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Under the theme ‘New Partnerships and Horizons for Peace: Mediation in a Changing World,’ the event convened diplomats, academics, and international organization representatives to discuss conflict prevention and sustainable peace. During the conference, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered a video message addressing the increasing frequency and complexity of global conflicts. He attributed this trend to rising geopolitical tensions, technological advancements, the climate crisis, and a ‘culture of impunity.’ Guterres advocated for the use of mediation to facilitate ceasefires and political agreements, emphasizing the need for dialogue, adherence to international law, and the addressing of root causes to achieve lasting peace. The conference brought together approximately 200 high-level officials and experts, including representatives from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Since 2012, Turkey has hosted these conferences to establish a platform for preventive diplomacy, currently holding co-chair positions for the Friends of Mediation groups within the United Nations, the OSCE, and the OIC.
