Aave GHO stablecoin reserve and backstop fluctuations
Overview
Aave has implemented measures to address declining reserves within its GHO stablecoin Stability Modules. To encourage repayments and replenish reserves, the GHO Risk Council and stewards increased borrowing rates on the Ethereum Core market from 4.25% to between 4.50% and 5.00%. This adjustment was intended to align borrowing costs with the Aave Savings Rate of 4.50%, thereby removing incentives for users to exploit yield gaps between borrowing and savings products.
By mid-October, Aave’s Ethereum V3 stablecoin backstops, which function as an ‘Umbrella system’ to absorb lending deficits, showed a continued decline. Between September 17 and October 17, these backstops shrank by $12.4 million, a 9.67% monthly decrease. Despite increases in reward rates for USDC and USDT, the combined positions totaled $116.09 million. During this period, the AAVE governance token also saw a price decrease of 3.55%, reaching $156.12.
