The British Royal Family has completed commemorations for the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Aberfan coal tip disaster, which killed 144 people. Leading up to the anniversary, King Charles III and Queen Camilla met Noah Jones, the great-grandson of Stephen Andrew, a caretaker who rescued survivors during the tragedy. The connection was discovered by chance when survivor Gareth Jones recognized a photograph of the caretaker at Noah’s school, identifying him as the man who had pulled him to safety through a window. During the official opening of the Senedd, the King noted he was “deeply touched” by the presence of the Aberfan community and praised the “strength of the Welsh — and the human — spirit.” On October 21, King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and Prince William traveled to South Wales for a joint appearance to mark the anniversary. The senior royals laid wreaths at the Aberfan Memorial Garden, located on the site of the former Pantglas Junior School, where they observed a moment of silence. Prince William also unveiled a memorial tree at Ynysowen Junior School. During a visit to the Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre, the King addressed survivors and bereaved families, praising the village's resilience and stating, “No one should ever have to bear what you, as a community, have endured. But no one could have borne it with greater strength, resilience, or hope.” He further described the event as the “most tragic of days imaginable” and commended the community’s “unconquerable spirit.” The joint appearance highlights the ongoing impact of the tragedy on the monarchy, noting that the late Queen Elizabeth II had previously faced criticism for a delay in visiting the village in 1966. The disaster, caused by a colliery spoil tip collapse following heavy rainfall, was later attributed to the National Coal Board, though no prosecutions were made.
