Bandai Namco released Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Project Aces using Unreal Engine 5, the game follows the Joker Flight team during the Sotoa-Usea War of 2029. Players assume the identity of a fallen legendary pilot, Jan ‘Rex’ Cope, to maintain morale through propaganda. Leading up to launch, Bandai Namco promoted the title with a four-part live-action prequel miniseries titled ‘Hour ~~Zero’, featuring actors Josh Holloway, Brandon Routh, and Tamlyn Tomita.~~ Zero’. Marketing also highlighted the game’s scale, with brand director Kazutoki Kono noting it features the longest campaign in the series' history, alongside the return of the ‘Annihilation Battle’ mode and enhanced environmental destruction. Multiplayer is supported through ‘Ace Combat Online’, a social hub for up to 100 players featuring ‘Co-Op Assault’ (PvE) and ‘Co-Op Warfare’ (PvPvE) modes. The game supports cross-play across all platforms. Commercially, the title reached a milestone of 1 million units sold within approximately one week, the fastest sales trajectory in the franchise's history. On Steam, it reached a peak of over 52,000 concurrent players. While critical reception has been strong, with an 87 Metacritic rating, the launch faced technical issues and backlash regarding the Steam version of the digital pre-order bonus. Specifically, the bonus title, Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, was delivered as DLC rather than a standalone application, requiring a 135 GB installation of the main game. Project Aces and Bandai Namco issued apologies, citing “licensing restrictions and platform-specific limitations on Steam.” In response to player reports of mission-breaking bugs, engine crashes, and controller connectivity issues, Bandai Namco released update Ver. 1.01.002 on October 20, 2026, to address campaign stability and multiplayer technical errors.
