Acer CEO Jason Chen has warned of a “technological inflation” that could drive the prices of PCs and notebooks up by 5% to 20% by the fourth quarter of 2026. This trend is driven by rising costs for essential components, specifically RAM and SSDs, as the industry's demand for AI-focused semiconductors pressures the global memory chip supply chain. Price increases are expected to most heavily impact high-capacity configurations, such as devices featuring 16 GB to 32 GB of RAM or SSDs with 1 TB or more capacity. While standard DDR4 and DDR5 supplies are improving and CPU availability remains generally stable, high-end specifications and certain mid-range models continue to face supply constraints. This volatility is attributed to the AI boom, which has shifted production capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators. Chen anticipates that average selling prices for PCs will peak around mid-2027 before beginning a downward trend in the second half of that year. He has dismissed predictions that memory shortages will persist until 2030, citing increased production capacity from Chinese manufacturers manufacturers, such as CXMT and YMTC, as a stabilizing factor. He also noted that the impact on final consumer products is subject to a time lag between component procurement and retail availability.
