Spanish center Aday Mara has transitioned from a standout preseason with the Oklahoma City Thunder to his official NBA debut. In a 116-104 away victory against the San Antonio Spurs, the 21-year-old, selected 12th overall in the NBA Draft, played over eleven minutes. Mara recorded seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, two rebounds, and one assist, highlighted by a significant defensive block on Victor Wembanyama during an alley-oop attempt. This debut follows a preseason where Mara demonstrated significant defensive presence, including a 17-point, 10-rebound, and 5-block performance against the Atlanta Hawks. During his preseason run, Mara also recorded a perfect 10-of-10 shooting performance against the Milwaukee Bucks, including seven dunks in the first half. While head coach Mark Daigneault has focused on refining Mara’s free-throw shooting, the player continues to navigate a formal contractual dispute between the Thunder and the Spanish club Casademont Zaragoza. Zaragoza maintains that Mara has a valid contract through the 2026/2027 season and has formally opposed his international transfer, citing an unpaid €600,000 buyout clause from his 2023 departure. Although Zaragoza has notified the NBA, FIBA, and the Spanish Basketball Federation of their intent to block the transfer, the Thunder have maintained that Mara’s eligibility to play in the United States is secure due to his three years of NCAA experience.
