ADNOC expansion and Strait of Hormuz maritime insecurity
Overview
ADNOC is undergoing significant strategic shifts and facing maritime security challenges in the Strait of Hormuz. Following the United Arab Emirates’ exit from OPEC in May, the company has adopted an aggressive global marketing approach, utilizing spot cargo tenders and expanding its shipping fleet to increase market share, particularly in Asia.
This expansion occurs amid heightened regional tensions. ADNOC reported a 52% year-on-year decline in second-quarter profit, which was attributed to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz following attacks on energy infrastructure and tankers. The UAE has accused Iran of carrying out a “hostile Iranian attack” on two ADNOC vessels, with the UAE Foreign Ministry characterizing the actions of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as “acts of piracy” designed to exert economic pressure.
To mitigate these risks, ADNOC has implemented a shuttle system to maintain crude movement. The company is also pursuing long-term growth through its Rich Gas Development project, awarding $8.2 billion in expansion contracts to Wison Engineering and Tecnimont. ADNOC has raised its targeted EBITDA growth to 60% by 2030 and expects to invest approximately $28 billion through that period.
