Adolescent bullying trends in Latin America
Overview
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has highlighted high rates of school and cyberbullying among adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean. Data indicates that approximately one in four adolescents aged 13 to 17 experiences bullying, with prevalence rates reaching roughly 23% in Central America and 30% in South America. Cyberbullying is also a significant issue, with reported rates between 7% and 27%, disproportionately affecting girls.
In response to these findings and the associated risks to mental and physical health—including depression, anxiety, and self-harm—PAHO has launched a specialized toolkit titled ‘What works to prevent bullying and cyberbullying of children and adolescents in the Americas’. This resource provides evidence-based recommendations for governments, schools, and families to detect, prevent, and respond to peer violence through early intervention and improved digital literacy.
