Developments regarding adrenaline nasal sprays as an alternative to traditional auto-injectors for treating anaphylaxis have emerged in Europe. In Italy, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has approved the spray for use in adults and adolescents weighing at least 30 kilograms. This authorization follows prior approvals from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Medical experts from the Italian Society of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (SIAAIC) noted the device may address needle phobia, social stigma, and administration errors, as up to 70% of patients use auto-injectors incorrectly. The spray also offers a 30-month shelf life, exceeding the 18-month period for standard injectors. In Italy, where approximately 10,000 cases of anaphylaxis are recorded annually resulting in 60 deaths, a pediatric formulation is expected by next spring. During the 38th national congress of SIAAIC, specialists highlighted that needle phobia can cause fatal delays, noting that currently only 7% of adults and 21% of children receive adrenaline in a timely manner. The nasal spray is reported to offer comparable efficacy and speed to intramuscular injections. In the United Kingdom, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has launched a consultation on proposals to allow schools to stock adrenaline nasal sprays for emergency use. This initiative aims to provide an additional option for schools to support children at risk of life-threatening allergic reactions, alongside existing adrenaline auto-injectors. With approximately 20% of serious food-related allergic reactions occurring in school settings, the proposal seeks to increase rapid response capabilities.
