Medical teams in Turkey have successfully performed several advanced, minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures on high-risk patients. In İzmir, surgeons at İzmir Şehir Hastanesi utilized the subclavian artery to perform a rare ‘subclavian TAVI’ heart valve procedure on a 76-year-old patient. This approach was necessary because the patient’s groin vessels were blocked and open-heart surgery was deemed too risky due to existing comorbidities. In Bursa, medical professionals at Bursa Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital performed a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) to place a bioprosthetic valve inside an existing mechanical valve, a procedure described as being documented in only a handful of cases globally. This specific ‘valve-in-valve’ method was used for 76-year-old patient Şükran Can, who had previously undergone two open-heart surgeries and possessed limited lung capacity, making further open surgery too high-risk. The procedure was led by Prof. Dr. Hasan Arı. Additionally, in Istanbul, surgeons at Memorial Göztepe ~~Hospital, surgeons~~ Hospital treated a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm using a closed method involving eight stents to avoid the risks associated with open surgery for a patient with COPD.
