Advancements in Alzheimer's blood test detection
Overview
Research led by neurologist Allal Boutjankout and NYU professor Thomas Wisniewski demonstrated that blood tests measuring plasma levels of beta-amyloid, tau, and inflammation-related proteins can identify Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers. The study indicated these markers could signal disease onset eight to ten years before clinical symptoms appear, potentially offering a lower-cost alternative to PET scans.
Following these developments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared several blood tests for Alzheimer’s detection. C2N Diagnostics received approval for the PrecivityAD2 test, which uses mass spectrometry to measure amyloid and tau proteins. Clinical studies reported a 97.6% accuracy rate, and the test is available for individuals aged 40 and older experiencing cognitive complaints.
Additionally, the FDA cleared the Elecsys pTau-217 test, a collaboration between Roche and Eli Lilly. Designed for individuals aged 55 and older showing signs of cognitive decline, it is the first test to measure a single biomarker, plasma phosphorylated tau 217, and is compatible with over 4,500 analyzers across the United States. These advancements follow a previous 2025 clearance of a Fujirebio Diagnostics test. While these tests offer a less invasive alternative to spinal fluid exams and PET scans, medical experts note they should not be used as a “sole definitive diagnosis without clinical context.”
